Ninth grade community building

Last Friday, the ninth grade students took an afternoon away from academics to build community.

We started with an assembly in which we introduced the leadership team, and the health and support staff. Students got to see images of their teachers when they were ninth graders and learned interesting facts about their teachers through fun trivia.

They then transitioned outside where they were greeted with different team building stations including balloon relays, sponge races, paper airplane contests, and a song-identifying game. We finished off with ice cream and popsicles, recognitions of exceptional team spirit and collaboration, and a group photo. It was a wonderful afternoon for everyone.

AP Physics I update

This past week in AP Physics I, students explored various ways to abstractly represent the motion of objects. After crafting claims and making predictions pertaining to the motion of a marble rolling down a ramp, students worked in small groups to collect data, which they used to calculate the acceleration and final velocity of an object. Stop by room 11 to check out their work!

Holocaust survivor presents to ninth graders

On Tuesday, June 13th, the 9th grade team capped off an interdisciplinary unit about the Holocaust with a virtual presentation by Ms. Fay Malkin. Ms. Malkin is a Holocaust survivor and activist with connections in the local community. She shared her incredible story with the ninth graders, telling them about the two years she spent in hiding with her family in a hayloft in Sokal, Poland (now Ukraine). Ms. Malkin's incredible story helped to underscore the depravity of the Holocaust and the resiliency of those who survived it.

Ms. Malkin was joined on the Zoom call by her daughter, Debbi Schonberger-Pierce, who shared her own perception of how the Holocaust impacts generations of people, as survivors and their descendents search for normalcy in the wake of genocide.

Students were moved by the presentation, and when asked why survivor stories matter, Sophia Rosenbach shared that it is essential to learn from survivors so that we do not repeat mistakes of the past. Ms. Malkin also conveyed one more piece of advice to her young audience: "talk to your grandparents." After all, she said, everyone has a story worth sharing, and we should learn from each other while we still can.

AP Art History tour Hall Art Foundation

On Thursday afternoon, Ms. Gravel's AP Art History class took a tour of the new exhibits at the Hall Art Foundation in Reading, Vermont with Ms. Piccoli. The students enjoyed seeing over 100 works by Andy Warhol in the small is beautiful exhibit. One of the highlights was wearing 3D glasses to view the stereoscopic silkscreen painting titled Patty Oldenburg. In the Susan Rothenberg retrospective, students practiced Visual Thinking Strategies with a piece titled Impending Doom. And, when looking at the shield-like armatures created by Ron Gorchov, Katie Jones found inspiration for a future art project.

Thanks so much to the Hall Art Foundation for making these exhibits accessible to our students. They also offer teachers professional opportunities over the summer.

Senior class trip to Boston!

The senior class took their senior trip to Boston on Monday. They started at the Aquarium, then had lunch at Faneuil Hall, shopping on Newbury St. and finally jumping at a trampoline park. It was a great great time! Thank you to Lily Gubbins, Norah Harper, Audrey Emery and Will Coates for planning this super awesome trip!
